Why You Should Visit the Florida Keys This Fall

October 9, 2021

The Florida Keys are amazing during every season; however, each season has its own awesome advantages. Fall is my favorite time to visit the Florida Keys. If you've never visited in the fall, then maybe I can convince you to plan a trip!  Here are some of the reasons that you should journey to the Keys this fall!

Find Peace in the Keys

We all know that the Keys are fantastic in the summer. That's why so many people plan their vacations during this time! Although the Keys are sublime in the summer, visiting during this time also means fighting for beach space, waiting in lines, and higher expenses. If you want a calmer, more intimate Keys experience, then the fall is the best time to visit! There's plenty of peace and quiet in the fall, which, when paired with the lovely autumn sun, makes for the perfect, tranquil trip. You'll truly be able to make the most of your vacation!

Savor Stone Crab Season

Fall is Stone Crab season in the Keys! If you love seafood, then you can't miss out on this seasonal treat. Stone Crab claws are steamed and then cracked open and eaten with your fingers. It is delicious- sort of like a cross between lobster and shrimp. It is especially tasty when served with a mustard sauce or wedge of lemon! Many local restaurants will add them to the menu, so you shouldn't have trouble hunting some down!

Fall in Love with Florida's Fall Fishing

If you enjoy fishing, then Florida's fall fishing will blow your mind. The Keys are known for their mahi mahi, which are abundant year-round but are most available in the fall. You'll also be able to catch tarpon in the Islamorada area and bonefish in the flats near Big Pine Key, Marathon, and Key West. If you venture into Everglades National Park, you have a chance at catching spotted sea trout, snook, red drum, black drum, tarpon and other fish.

If you're planning on fishing while you're in the Keys, then you need to make sure you have an appropriate permit!

Fall is Fun in the Keys!

There are lots of fall events to enjoy when you're in the Florida Keys. Coming up in the next few weeks, there is REEF Fest (a celebration of marine conservation), a Stone Crab claw eating contest, a fly fishing championship that seeks to crown "King of the Backcountry," the iconic Fantasy Fest, and other festivities. And that's just the tip of the iceberg! No matter our interests, there is an activity for you to enjoy in the Keys.

What's your favorite thing about autumn in the Keys?
