One of the most well-known activities in Key West is their excellent snorkeling. Key West is home to one of the largest great barrier reefs in the entire world and is the only live reef in North America. There are several places you can tour and snorkel that are gorgeous. Before you go though, there are some tips and tricks to keep in mind before you jump in.
- Do yourself a favor, and make sure to get your hands on well fitting equipment. Many first timers often skip this step, but that can make for a not so fun day in the water. Having a mask that does not fit properly will fog and make vision challenging while you are trying to swim. Also, make sure that your fins fit properly. These fins will help propel you in the water and make swimming for an extended period much easier. Having fins that slip off too easily will make your time very uncomfortable and having them too tight may cause sores and irritation. Well fitting equipment will make for a great day in the water.
- Bring a buddy or two with you. Swimming alone can be dangerous; but, having a friend or two along for the adventure will give you more confidence and you can help one another navigate. Plus, it’s always helpful to have another set of eyes on things. Your friend can also help with photos and you will have a memory together that will last a lifetime.
- Remember: look do not touch. The reef is gorgeous, and you may see many things that you will be tempted to touch. The reef is not a petting zoo. Remember, a reef is a living organism, and human contact can harm the reef and wildlife. Simply observe all the beauty the reef has to offer with your eyes and maybe bring along a waterproof camera!
The reef is full of color and life. With these helpful tips, an awesome partner in crime, and maybe a tube of sunscreen, you will be sure to have a great time.
