Memorial Day is a few days away! How are you celebrating this unofficial kick-off to the summer season? Here are some ideas for a Memorial Day celebration in the Florida Keys that is fun but still respectful towards the individuals who died serving our country.
Attend a Special Event
One of the best ways to honor the service of those who died for our country is by attending a special Memorial Day event. In Islamorada, there will be a Memorial Day Weekend Party, hosted by Island Grill. There will be two live bands and a DJ, plus a delicious BBQ feast and drink specials. You can also attend the moving Memorial Day Service by The Matecumbe Historical Trust in Islamorada. This emotional event will offer a touching tribute to our fallen heroes.
In Key Largo, you can join in the 2nd annual BBQ Fundraiser for Team River Runner & Disabled Veterans. Eat some yummy food and dance to some marvelous music for a great cause! Another option is the Key Largo Community Memorial Day Run.
Can't attend an event or a ceremony? Consider volunteering at a Veteran's Organization or learning about local heroes.
Enjoy the Outdoors
Memorial Day is a great time to get outside and enjoy nature! The Florida Keys are known for their gorgeous beaches, so you can rest assured that you'll have plenty of options for water-based activities. You can sunbathe, swim, surf, fish, boat, and more! If you have time, then we recommend checking out Dry Tortugas National Park, where you can explore Fort Jefferson, take in the picturesque blue waters, experience coral reefs, and admire all sorts of wildlife. Other parks, like Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park, John Pennekamp State Park, and Bahia Honda State Park are also wonderful to tour!
