The city of Key West is preparing to celebrate its bicentennial- and you're invited to celebrate with them! Check out the super celebration from March 19-30!
200 years ago, on March 25, 1822, the first permanent settlement was formed in Key West when U.S. Navy Lt. Matthew Perry planted the American flag on the island’s soil. Throughout March, the planned festivities will honor local history, architecture, food, culture, art, industries, residents, and more!
One of the biggest events taking place is the Key West Maritime Historical Society’s presentation of Perry’s original logbook for permanent safekeeping at the Monroe County Public Library’s Florida History Department in Key West. This ceremony will take place on March 20. If you enjoy that, then you should also check out the re-enactment of Perry’s planting of the American flag on March 25! The re-enactment will be followed by a parade and, later in the day, by the Key West Bicentennial Celebratory Gala.
On March 26, the Bicentennial Heritage Festival at Truman Waterfront Park will feature family fun, including stage performances with local music and historic talks. You can also catch an exhibit that celebrates Key West’s baseball history and a free screening of Key West – Come as You Are: 200 Years of Culture and History. And that's just the beginning! As you can see, there is plenty of fun to be had!
